The time has arrived that we all get onboard and build better. We have the tools at our disposal and once we engage the right balance of materials and systems we can increase the market value of a building based on it's green features and related performance.

Why is building green important?

Climate change is the single greatest threat to public health in the 21st century. It already impacts all facets of our lives from more extreme weather, wildfires, and disasters to rising sea levels, increased air pollution, and the likelihood of more disease. A new report released by the World Health Organization warns that “no one is safe from these risks,”. Put simply, there is increasing agreement that the earth cannot sustain the current consumption of its non-renewable resources and the damage being done to its atmosphere. Unless changes are made, it is further agreed, life upon earth will become even more difficult, if not impossible. Globally, buildings and construction activity consume:

• Three billion tons of raw materials, or 40% of total global use

• Buildings use 40% of the world’s materials and energy

• 55% of the wood cut for uses other then fuel is for construction

• 30% of newly-built or renovated buildings suffer from ‘sick building syndrome’, their occupants exposed to stale, or mould- or chemical-laden air

• Buildings and construction materials production account for at least 30% of greenhouse gas emissions.

• The average home in BC utilizes more than 75% of our energy sources for space and water heating.


What can I do as a homeowner/developer to build better, increase the market value of my asset and put money back in my pocket?

- the building products that we primarily build with contain chemicals that are often very toxic to human bodies. Toxins can now be found in almost every building product in conventionally built structures.⁠ It is our job to know, at a minimum, enough to not include materials that contain chemicals in the buildings that we are designing.⁠ The International Living Future Institute produces a Red List of hazardous materials that should be avoided when designing.
